Low Cost Frugal Food Staples to Keep Handy in the Kitchen

 

It’s hard to imagine your kitchen without these staples.

They are often cheap, and they make the most of your daily menus as well as your grocery shopping list. It makes sense to stock up enough of these, not only are they cheap they are good for us too.

1. Dried beans.

You may choose canned beans, but they’re more expensive. Dried beans are much cheaper, and you can cook them and store the cooked beans in the freezer. Why beans? They’re rich in protein and fiber, which are great for your health. Plus, beans fit into numerous recipes, including main courses and appetizers. They blend well with other dishes. Ever tried egg burritos and black beans?

2. Lentils.
They’re like beans except that you don’t need to soak and cook them. After rinsing, they can be added to your recipes. They’re awesome for soups and salads.

3. Rice.
Eating rice isn’t just an Asian thing. A lot of Americans eat rice. Two of the most popular varieties are brown rice and white rice. For many people, it’s their main source of carbohydrates. Bagged rice is cheap and has quite a long shelf life. It’s easy to cook. Once cooked, it becomes an ideal companion of your favorite dishes.

4. Flour.
If you love baking, you got to have flour in the cupboard. It also comes handy in a lot of recipes. So it makes sense to stock up on this staple. If you like baking bread, stock up on yeast as well.

5. Oats.
They’re frugal. They’re the good carbs every health buff is talking about. You can bake goodies using oats. You can add them to ground beef. You can prepare oats for quick breakfast. Low cholesterol means your heart will thank you.

6. Lemon juice.
It’s versatile. It adds flavor and tang to your salads. You can use it for dips. Of course, you can drink it.

7. Canned tuna.
Two things: protein and omega-3. You need these nutrients whether you’re cranking out bench presses in the gym or you just want to stay healthy. Add tuna to a cup of rice, and you have a meal rich in protein and carbs. It’s also great in casseroles and sandwiches. Our firm favorite is baked potatoes with tuna mayonnaise, yum!

8. Pasta.
A lot of people love spaghetti, noodle soups, and carbonara. If you’re one of them, you better have a good supply of pasta, which is a versatile staple food. Wholegrain pasta is the way to go because it’s good carbs.

 

9. Peanut butter. Another handy thing to keep in the fridge, peanut butter goes well with slices of bread. But it’s not just for sandwiches. Try peanut butter marinade for chicken kabobs.

10. Eggs.
They are versatile. You can make hundreds of dishes using eggs. The quickest ones are omelets and hard boiled goodies for breakfasts. Eggs are rich in protein, B vitamins, and choline. They’re good for your brain and muscles.

11. Potatoes.
Potatoes provide carbs for people who don’t like rice. They’re great for many soup dishes, casseroles, and snacks. But don’t indulge too much in fries.

12. Olive oil.
The trend now is towards healthier options for cooking oil, and that’s why more people are buying olive oil.

13. Cocoa.
Do you like hot chocolate or chocolate-flavored pastry? Then keep cocoa at hand.

14. Onion.
Too many sauteed and fried dishes cannot be possible without onions.

15. Garlic.
Garlic is just like onions. It’s a spice that adds flavor to foods and is a part of a many recipes.

16. Spices.
Go for dried spices because they are cheaper than the fresh ones. Their long shelf life allows you to store them for months. Oregano, basil, thyme, and pepper come handy in a lot of dishes and appetizers.

17. Frozen veggies.
Fresh vegetables are lovely, but they don’t last long enough. I have wasted a lot of money not eating up fresh veggies fast enough.The frozen ones are the appropriate alternative if you don’t like going to the market more than once a week.

18. Chicken.
Chicken is a good source of protein. It doesn’t matter if you’re a strength trainer or not, you need protein to live. It’s also cheaper than beef.

19. Vinegar.
Great for salad dressings and marinades, vinegar also has numerous household uses. Hence, keeping them in your kitchen cabinet is more than a good idea.
